In 1997, a small group of mostly rural, Southern, African American church leaders and allies from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas whose places of worship were reduced to ashes by arsonist roaming the South torching churches “just for the thrill of it” established the National Coalition for Burned Churches. The Spirit of the Living God inspired us to come together as a faith based response to the 1996 church burning crisis. We are a multi-racial, interfaith coalition of clergy, laity, partners and friends who work diligently to provide on going support to today’s survivors of church arson.
Our mission is to protect the right of congregations to worship in peace: free from the threat of arson, bombing and vandalism through programs in public education, awareness, research, victim support, church rebuilding and volunteer coordination and community leadership development.
